I'd like to wish everyone a Happy Spring!

A reminder: Learning through the summer is critical. As stated in a recent article by the Wall Street Journal, "Summer learning loss is no joke. When they return to school in late August or early September, many children, especially the least advantaged among them, have shed a sizable portion of what they had learned by May - a full month's worth by most estimates, adding up to 1.3 school years by the end of high school"

If you are going on vacation, please let me know in advance so I may prepare your work to take with you. We can modify the work to meet your needs (remember the down time on the plane, in the car, etc).

The American Education System
Headed For a Revamp

'Much education today is monumentally ineffective. All too often we are giving young people cut flowers when we should be teaching them to grow their own...'

The origin of that quote is unknown but nobody is more sensitive to its veracity than the President himself. President Obama struck a cautious word of warning about the nation's flawed educational system that requires to be reformed. This is borne out by statistics which reveal that 90% of American states receive D's and F's on an international scale. The nation's competitiveness has been called in question which lags far behind China, Korea and many other developing nations.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provides for $5 billion for early learning programs which includes Head Start, Early Head Start, child care, and programs for children with special needs. It seeks to provide quality education which is central to the nation's economic future. The survival of the American Dream and the nation's future economic competitiveness will depend on every child being provided with an education that will place it on a platform to succeed in the global economy of the future which will be knowledge and innovation based. The President is dedicated to ensuring that every child has access to complete and competitive education from 'cradle through career'. States will be urged to raise the bar for all publicly financed early learning settings; to develop new opportunity focused programs; to engage parents in their children's early learning and development and to improve the workforce committed to early education.

President Obama is committed to reform the country's public schools to provide 21st century education which will enable all children to succeed in the global workplace of the future. He will promote world-class academic standards with a curriculum oriented toward critical thinking and problem solving. He will strive to end ineffectual, stereotyped tests and support state-of-the-art accountability and assessment systems which will offer useful and timely data about the academic progress of individual students. President Obama's road map is to have all students graduate high school and be ready for college or a career by 2020.

"Dear Vivian,

First and foremost - thank you so much for all your tireless effort, boundless energy and dedication to your learning program. We will really miss you! We've been in the program for almost 2 years and it has made such tremendous difference. Your standards and expectations for the children (and the parents) are high and most of the time we rise to the occasion. Your passion for the program and for the children comes across in so many wonderful ways. Thank you.

I respect and admire the way you have run the Center and I know that it has not always been an easy or smooth process. Vivian, I can't really express to you in words how important this program is and how much you have shaped and influenced our fantastic experience!! I wish you all the success as you move to the next chapter of excitement and adventure in your life. Through your efforts and the program you have helped instill discipline, independence, confidence and the principals of mastery over time. These are the type of qualities I wanted for my children to know and experience. Awesome!! We will miss you.

Enjoy, with wonderful wishes from the Brown family!"
Pinecone's Strategy

Pinecone's methodology is to run the two foundation programs of Math and Reading at a pace which allows the child to assimilate the subject matter and apply the new acquired skills to practical problem solving. The coaching is structured so that the child is able to reason for him/herself to achieve the highest level of comprehension. Regular practice and support instills self confidence and stimulates an eagerness to progress to the next level. Each student is groomed to anticipate and surmount hurdles consistent with present day education. The end result is a happy and confident child who is justifiably proud of his or her academic achievements.
