Interaction and Motivation are Keys to Achievement

At Pinecone Active Learning Center our goal is to guide children to gain mastery in Comprehension, Reading and Math. We believe that command of these foundation skills forms the core of all learning. We follow the 'active learning' method of instruction which is an interactive technique where our students become more involved in the learning process while we instructors play an unobtrusive guidance role. We have adopted this methodology which is well established and delivers results. Parents are assured of swift improvement in concentration, focus and attitude and a deeper understanding of principles which leads to better grades. Our endeavor is to provide a learning-friendly environment which makes a child eager to learn and gain mastery of a subject. We are acutely aware of the importance of a happy and motivated child and the value of self-confidence and esteem. True, personalities, comprehension and attitudes vary from child to child, in some cases inherently, while in others because of their surrounding environment. We accept that premise but believe in motivating a child to bring in the required transformation towards acquiring new skills for absorbing knowledge. Our results are enough to vindicate our belief.

Active Learning, as the name suggests, is about engaging students actively in the learning and problem solving process. This methodology is sometimes defined as instructional procedures engaging students in performing activities and thinking about what it is they are doing. Active Learning has a powerful impact on the learning process. Many studies have been conducted, which prove irrefutably that students prefer strategies which promote active learning to traditional methods of classroom instruction. Other studies evaluating comparative teaching methods have shown that strategies using active learning have proved superior to traditional methods in terms of comprehension and writing.

Problem Solving an Important Attribute

childProblem solving is one of the most important skills in active learning, on which we place particular emphasis. It is the ability to apply appropriate skills in a systematic manner towards identifying problems and solving them. A student is encouraged to generate hypotheses and test their assumptions to arrive at acceptable solutions. We subscribe to the concept that problem solving should be inculcated into a child at a very young age. We endeavor to engage our students in finding logical solutions to problems, entirely on their own, which helps strengthen their self belief. With active learning, our role as instructor is passive, much like a moderator. We seek to stimulate student interest by encouraging active involvement and animated discussion as a route to problem solving. In active learning we strive to transfer the responsibility for learning to the student.

"Dear Vivian,

First and foremost - thank you so much for all your tireless effort, boundless energy and dedication to your learning program. We will really miss you! We've been in the program for almost 2 years and it has made such tremendous difference. Your standards and expectations for the children (and the parents) are high and most of the time we rise to the occasion. Your passion for the program and for the children comes across in so many wonderful ways. Thank you.

I respect and admire the way you have run the Center and I know that it has not always been an easy or smooth process. Vivian, I can't really express to you in words how important this program is and how much you have shaped and influenced our fantastic experience! I wish you all the success as you move to the next chapter of excitement and adventure in your life. Through your efforts and the program you have helped instill discipline, independence, confidence and the principals of mastery over time. These are the type of qualities I wanted for my children to know and experience. Awesome! We will miss you."

Pinecone's Strategy

Pinecone's methodology is to run the two foundation programs of Math and Reading at a pace which allows the child to assimilate the subject matter and apply the new acquired skills to practical problem solving. The coaching is structured so that the child is able to reason for him/herself to achieve the highest level of comprehension. Regular practice and support instills self confidence and stimulates an eagerness to progress to the next level. Each student is groomed to anticipate and surmount hurdles consistent with present day education. The end result is a happy and confident child who is justifiably proud of his or her academic achievements.
