Happy Easter, happy spring! Sunny days are here again. As thoughts turn to summer, please don't forget to take Pinecone with you on your trips. You don't want to lose ground over the summer after all your hard work. PLEASE PICK UP A VACATION SCHEDULE in class or online and let me know as early as you can about your plans. I can have your work modified to meet your vacation needs and ready to go before you leave.

Important request: Please bring in copies of good grades, report cards, certificates, ribbons, awards - any accomplishment in school that shows the results of your hard work at Pinecone. Or, bring in the originals and I'll make copies! I want to frame them with your picture to put in our windows and on our Pinenuts Gallery Wall. You should be proud and everyone should share your accomplishments and maybe be inspired! I am pleased that we now have four Algebra and Pre-Algebra students with a couple more just finishing fractions. I want everyone to complete Algebra well before high school. Some of you will do this by 6th grade!

Watch for updates on our in-class video to be shot in early May. I want you to bring in your release forms and be on your best Pinecone behavior! :)

Reminder: We will be closed Thursday, April 28.

No Child Left Behind

childPresident Obama has long voiced his concern over falling standards in U.S. schools. For this reason his administration has proposed sweeping changes to the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001, which oversees the federal government's role in education. In fact education reform was a major plank of Mr. Bush during his presidential campaign of 2000. President Bush proposed a test-based system of accountability for schools, which met considerable opposition from conservatives. The NCLB bill, steered through the Senate by the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy, became law during the Bush administration, the President's only concrete bipartisan domestic achievement before the September 11 attacks.

Currently the law calls upon every state to establish standards in the basic skills of reading and math, and to ensure that every student achieves proficiency in these subjects by 2014. NCLB works on the belief that setting high but attainable standards and measuring the progress annually will improve individual performances in education. The system being followed at present is to test all students in grades 3 through 8 yearly, and issue reports about whether schools are making the required advancement toward attaining the goal. Schools that do not make the required yearly improvement are liable to an escalating scale of sanctions which range from providing necessary tutoring to students to facing the threat of state take-over or even facing shut down of individual schools.

In July 2005 the Department of Education indicated a marked improvement in student achievement in reading and math. Some of the salient achievements were:

• The nation's nine-year-olds achieved the best scores in math since 1973 and reading since 1971.
Children in this age group performed better in the preceding five years since 2000 than in the
   last 28 years.

• The nation's 13-year-olds posted the highest math scores ever recorded.

• Significant academic improvement was made in forty-three states in the county and the
District of Columbia in all categories of students.

Not withstanding this improvement in 2011 many of the best-run schools in the country will probably fail to meet the rising standards of testing targets. Approximately 82% of schools are liable to fall short of NCLB's requirements.

"Hi Vivian,

First and foremost - thank you so much for all your tireless effort, boundless energy and dedication to your learning program. We will really miss you! We've been in the program for almost 2 years and it has made such tremendous difference. Your standards and expectations for the children (and the parents) are high and most of the time we rise to the occasion. Your passion for the program and for the children comes across in so many wonderful ways. Thank you.

I respect and admire the way you have run the Center and I know that it has not always been an easy or smooth process. Vivian, I can't really express to you in words how important this program is and how much you have shaped and influenced our fantastic experience!! I wish you all the success as you move to the next chapter of excitement and adventure in your life. Through your efforts and the program you have helped instill discipline, independence, confidence and the principals of mastery over time. These are the type of qualities I wanted for my children to know and experience. Awesome!! We will miss you.

Enjoy, with wonderful wishes from the Brown family!"

Pinecone's Strategy

Pinecone's methodology is to run the two foundation programs of Math and Reading at a pace which allows the child to assimilate the subject matter and apply the new acquired skills to practical problem solving. The coaching is structured so that the child is able to reason for him/herself to achieve the highest level of comprehension. Regular practice and support instills self confidence and stimulates an eagerness to progress to the next level. Each student is groomed to anticipate and surmount hurdles consistent with present day education. The end result is a happy and confident child who is justifiably proud of his or her academic achievements.
