Problem Solving in Active Learning

PineconeProblem solving is a critical element in Active Learning, an education technique which involves the student in more than just listening to a series of structured lessons or instructions. Active Learning requires a student to dynamically participate in the learning process and DO something which includes discovering data, processing it and applying the findings obtained. Active Learning is based on two fundamental premises. It assumes that learning in itself is an active endeavor and that the way and rate of learning is a process which varies from person to person. Active Learning as a teaching methodology has proved to be more effective when it comes to greater learning. The primary elements involved in Active learning are listening and discussing, reading, writing and reflecting toward problem solving. The emphasis is more on developing student skills rather than conveying information and having them listen passively. Increased emphasis is placed on self-exploration.

Problem solving, an integral part of active learning, is the ability of a student to identify problems toward finding solutions with the systematic application of relevant skills. It is an on-going activity or process where a student relies on what is known to discover the unknown. Active Learning might be termed as a voyage of discovery in the learning process. The three fundamental elements of problem solving are:

       • Gathering information
       • Fostering new knowledge from this information
       • Making decisions

Problem solving must necessarily be a critical part of an Active learning teaching curriculum. It assumes that the student takes on part of the responsibility in their own learning and is personally involved in solving problems, resolving conflicts, finding alternatives and focusing on thinking. It will afford students the opportunity to apply their new-found knowledge in their daily lives and real-life activities, and help them work at a higher level of thinking.

When applied to younger students, illustrations work better in organizing data, processing information and defining the limits of a problem with the possible solutions that exist. Drawing and illustrations help younger students view a problem from different perspectives.

Conclusions drawn from numerous studies suggest that the best teaching environment for kids is when they are actively involved. Active involvement in the classroom has irrefutably proved to generate the best results. Students absorb more information and are able to process it better when they are actively involved rather than when they have to listen. With the spectacular outcome of this relatively new teaching method, more and more teachers, training institutions and school districts are focusing on and leaning toward Active learning as the preferred medium of teaching. Active learning not just helps students to learn better but also makes the classroom more exciting. Teachers have found students taught by the Active learning method to have better grades with less behavior problems.
