How to help your child learn Math

"Do not worry about your difficulties in mathematics. I can assure you that mine are still greater." - Albert Einstein

Whether you are aware of it or not, math is a struggle everyone lives with. It makes no difference whether you are a homeowner finding new ways to stretch your income to meet monthly bills, or a child undergoing the frustration of trying to master the multiplication tables, all of us are affected by math. Some find math a piece of cake while others just cannot come to terms with it. We all use math in our daily lives though most of us are unaware of it. Whether it's a housewife making a grocery list or a builder figuring out how many insulated blocks are needed for a construction, math is ever present. People with limited proficiency in math achieve only limited success in coping with many of the challenges we meet in our daily lives.

What Math do our children learn in school?

Every school has its own curriculum though most follow state curriculum guidelines and frameworks. These are largely aligned with national standards which were developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) for math. NCTM standards enunciate five general goals:

    • To inculcate in all student an awareness of the value of math
    • To build confidence in a student of his/her ability to cope with math
    • To teach students to solve mathematical problems
    • To teach students to communicate mathematically
    • To teach students to reason mathematically

While students must continue to be taught the basic math concepts and skills, schools should increasingly focus on the value of math. Teachers should endeavor to impart an awareness of the connection and application of math to daily life and the workplace.
How could parents help?

PineconeSeveral studies have shown that there is a clear link between the level of involvement of parents and the degree of academic success of their children in school. Families have a critical role to play in educating children. The family's attitude is more important for scholastic success regardless of economic and social background. Family involvement in education is so critical as to lead the U.S. Congress to factor an additional goal to the existing National Education Goals:

"Every school will promote partnerships that will increase parental involvement and participation in promoting the social, emotional, and academic growth of children."

In furtherance of its objective, the U.S. Department of Education initiated a Partnership for Family Involvement in Education program. Communities are provided with funding for developing programs that serve families.

The solution for busy parents

Unfortunately the rapid pace of today's society leave many children disadvantaged because their parents are not able to extend the level of attention their children require for educational achievement. It is not for lack of intent, rather the demands of their jobs, extended hours and the pressure they work under. The answer in such circumstances is to make use of the services of a tutoring center which is able to devote the time and attention for one-on-one teacher-student interaction.

"The consistency and repetition makes a huge difference in doing their school work. The regular timed tests are really helping Caroline to go faster and be more accurate. Walker is now motivated and competitive with kids in his class. He has passed almost his entire class and is now on division."

~ Robin

"Just wanted to give you the heads up that based on grade and test score levels in Math, Natasha was accepted in an Advanced Math class. After all these years, the hard work paid off. Today, she only spent 15 min on her homework (which is a 50% time reduction) compared to earlier this week. I think she is finally getting the hang of the sequencing challenge..."

Pinecone's Strategy

childPinecone's methodology is to run the two foundation programs of Math and Reading at a pace which allows the child to assimilate the subject matter and apply the new acquired skills to practical problem solving. The coaching is structured so that the child is able to reason for him/herself to achieve the highest level of comprehension. Regular practice and support instills self confidence and stimulates an eagerness to progress to the next level. Each student is groomed to anticipate and surmount hurdles consistent with present day education. The end result is a happy and confident child who is justifiably proud of his or her academic achievements.
