Reading and math are the essential foundations of the education process. In a world growing increasingly complex and technical, it is easy to focus on the essentials of math and give less importance to reading. This may be a costly mistake as both subjects are equally critical to future academic success. Reading is the doorway to knowledge of all kinds, and the earlier a child learns to open the door, the better equipped he or she will be to access and internalize the information that is available.

The Three Basics of Reading

PineconeThere are three skills that a child must learn in order to grow into a strong reader. These are:

Print Knowledge - an understanding of letters, words and books. The child learns that reading allows a message to be communicated, and that text is able to convey this information in greater detail and clarity than pictures do. The child also learns how to read a book - how to hold the book correctly, where to begin, the process of page turning, and reading from left to right and from top to the bottom of the page. These may seem like automatic actions to adults but the fact is, that they are skills that need to be learned.

Language awareness - An appreciation of how language works. The child develops an awareness of how language can be used to convey not just information but also ideas and concepts, even though the child may not yet understand the terms being used.

The beginning of writing - First efforts may be made to use letters and words in a logical way to convey meanings. Letters are arranged in sequence in an attempt to form words and then sentences. The spelling may be wrong, but the ability to use phonetics to try to create written words is the beginning of the ability to use written communication. This is usually followed by an interest in the ability to write one's own name.

Developing These Skills

PineconeTo some extent, children develop these skills by a variety of experiences with books and language. From having stories read to them to connecting a few simple words, to familiar objects and watching parents read, there are many influences that affect a child's interest in and ability to read. Unfortunately, in most cases these influences are not enough, and more specialized tutoring becomes essential. The need for tutoring is no reflection on the ability of the parents to inculcate a love for reading in a child or a comment on the child's environment. The increasing pressures of an audio visual world and the competitive nature of education combine to simultaneously reduce a child's contact with the written word while forcing him or her to become an adept reader so as to stay if not ahead, at least on par with peers.

It is to help remedy this situation and provide expert tutoring in reading and math that Pinecone Learning exists. At Pinecone, we work with our students to encourage them in their efforts to master the foundations of reading. This is done by sequential programs, expert guidance, caring tutors and a learning friendly environment where the child feels comfortable.
A Child Centric Focus

At Pinecone we focus on the child and his or her needs, and we work with the children to address specific issues that will allow them to hone their reading skills. A structured weekly program of booklets enables students to decode words without fear. This is combined with an early comprehension series that is designed to promote reading for meaning. Once a child realizes that reading can be informative and entertaining, the urge to read becomes self-regenerating.

We also use a vocabulary program to create interesting activities that challenge the children to strengthen their basic language skills. A variety of age appropriate exercises allows students to increase their understanding of the language. From here the children are encouraged to develop sentence writing skills using the words that the continue to learn.

PineconeAlong with all this, an early start is made towards correct grammatical usage of language. Developing an appreciation of the need for correct grammar use at an early age allows for it to strengthen and grow as the child matures.

Pinecone Learning is tailored to the needs of both students and parents. Students may come in at any time during class hours and in the normal course, spend about 20 minutes per subject. Once the session is over, there is a special reading area where children can wait in safety and comfort for their parents to pick them up.

All it takes to give your child a head start is a call to Pinecone Learning.
