Information Vs. Knowledge

In everyday conversation, the reference to a person being "well informed" or being "knowledgeable" about a particular topic may mistakenly be taken as one in the same. But information and knowledge are not the same. It is especially important to recognize this distinction with regard to a child's education.

PineconeInformation is the collection of data. This includes facts, assumptions, concepts, theories and so on. The commonality among them is that they are all either presented by or created by others. Acquiring information means collecting the data and being able to refer to it when required.

Knowledge involves much more. Knowledge is the ability to use the information that has been collected to create new paradigms, theories, processes, concepts and ways of doing things. In other words, knowledge is the ability to use information to create something new that will, for those who follow, become information.

The Development Of Knowledge

The ability to turn information into knowledge is not one that humans are born with. It is an acquired skill that should be the focus of education. Unfortunately, the pressures of modern life and the educational curricula that children have to live with often preclude the development of knowledge. There is usually so much information to be absorbed that this storing of information becomes the primary focus of education. While the pursuit of information is important, it is not and cannot be the end result of education. It is the ability to turn information into knowledge that generates success in life. One way to bypass the limitations of the education system and provide a child the ability to acquire and use knowledge is by enrolling your child in Pinecone Learning's tutoring services for the development of foundation skills.

Grand Opening a huge success! Dozens of families had a great time with the animals and enjoyed the goodies. Interested parents also learned a lot about our programs. A good time was had by all. Watch for the article in the Evergreen Times coming soon.

The Pinecone Learning Way

At Pinecone Learning we do not believe that filling children's heads with information will enable them to develop the academic, cognitive and life skills that will serve to bring them future success. We focus on enabling children to acquire the ability to gain and use knowledge - the essential tool for success in life. How do we do this? A look at our Math Program will be a good example. The math program is designed to give children mastery in computational skills. The carefully planned progression is such that skills are presented and absorbed in a carefully orchestrated sequence to allow for each step to be practiced until it is not just learned, but understood and becomes a useable skill. The student is encouraged to internalize or "own" each new concept acquired. This means not just knowing it but understanding and being able to use what has been learned. Only then is the next step begun.

At Pinecone Learning we know that children learn at different rates - some may be fast in some subjects but slow in others. We provide individual pacing for each of our students so that the negative pressure of being forced to keep up with others is not felt. Learning becomes an enjoyable challenge. And the child finds satisfaction in not just learning but in having the ability to apply the information learned and turn it into knowledge.

Planting Seeds

Of course, these are concepts that the child will not understand. And the full benefits of the abilities acquired at a young age will only be completely apparent when the child is older and begins to face stiffer academic and life challenges. It is now that the ability to apply knowledge and not just offer information will allow those children who have studied at San Jose's Pinecone Learning to move rapidly ahead. We plant the seeds that will bloom fully in the future. As a parent you may have some reservations or be skeptical of such claims, but there is a simple way to see the Pinecone Learning difference for yourself. All you need to do is contact us for a firsthand experience of what we offer your children.

Pinecone Learning - Where Your Children's Tomorrow Begin

childPinecone's methodology is to run the two foundation programs of Math and Reading at a pace which allows the child to assimilate the subject matter and apply the newly acquired skills to practical problem solving. The coaching is structured so that the child is able to reason for him/herself to achieve the highest level of comprehension. Regular practice and support instill self confidence and stimulate an eagerness to progress to the next level. Each student is guided to anticipate and surmount hurdles consistent with present day education. The end result is a happy and confident child who is justifiably proud of his or her academic achievements.
