What Makes A Good Tutor?

PineconeAs academic pressure continues to build on young children, the need for learning support continues to grow. Tutoring is one of the most effective and popular ways in which this can be provided to students. If done properly it can provide students with the learning skills they need to not only stay abreast of but even surpass their peers within the school environment. The key to successful tutoring is the tutor herself. Her skills, qualifications, experience and attitude are what define how stress free and effective tutoring is for a student.

A Tutor is Not Just Another Teacher

A tutor fills a role that is very different from that of a teacher. The tutor is able to build a personal relationship with the student that a teacher in a school environment cannot. In school the teacher is focused on teaching a class. A tutor teaches an individual. Because of the direct equation between tutor and student, communication, understanding and support become much easier and more effective. This is a two-way channel as the more the tutor understands the student, the more effective will be the tutoring.

The Hallmarks of a Good Tutor

• Good tutors build strong personal relationships with their students. The stronger the relationship the greater the trust and respect; and the stronger they are, the bigger the channel for imparting knowledge. A good tutor will:

      a. Make the learning process really personal
      b. Ensure that connections to the student's interests and strengths are incorporated into
          the learning process
      c. Teach to the students' strengths
      d. Minimize the pressure caused by the students' weaknesses

• Good tutors communicate with all the stakeholders - parents as well as the children. This allows for the creation of individual learning plans when required that provide the necessary level of comfort and confidence to all those involved. When the student, the parents and the tutor are all on the same page everyone benefits.

• Although it may seem so obvious that it needs no mention, the fact is that the need for the tutor to have content expertise is often given less than its due importance. This is essential to inculcating an interest in the subjects they are learning in the minds of the students. This happens when content expertise enables the tutor to create project based learning that combines the demands of the school curriculum with the interests or special abilities of the students. When this happens it becomes easier to challenge the students and by doing so enhance both their subject specific abilities as well as their interest in looking for challenges beyond the limits of the curriculum.

Pinecone Why Pinecone Learning?

A child needing additional learning support is not a sign of weakness of lack of aptitude. Every human being develops in a unique manner and at his or her own rate. In general, child who is not able to keep up with some aspects of the school curriculum will either be ahead of other children in other aspects or will show a sudden spurt in the internalization process that will re-establish the academic equilibrium. However, during the period when the child is facing difficulties, a lack of self-confidence and doubts about his or her abilities sets in. This can become a major obstacle to future academic achievements. It is here that the tutor plays a key role. Not only is the required academic supports provided, the personal equation between tutor and student is instrumental in creating a level of confidence and emotional stability that will empower the student to compete and achieve not just academically but in life.

At Pinecone Learning we know that the foundation skills are the tools on which future learning is based. That is why our reading, writing and math programs are designed to not only provide out student with the scholastic support they need to master these subjects; the confidence that come from mastering these skills results in positive reinforcement in other academic areas and in overall attitude and behavior.

"Vivian's program is helping my child build a strong foundation in math skills and concepts. At school, the textbooks seem to touch the surface of math concepts very quickly and by the end of the week the students are given a math test. We were concerned about our child actually learning the basic core foundations of math with this approach of the school textbooks. We didn't understand how our child would succeed in learning the basic math skills to build upon to the next levels in math. Then we found Vivian's Pinecone program.

The Pinecone Program is great and it meets your child where he/she is currently in reading and/or math. An individual plan is created for your child to meet his/her needs whether your child is struggling or a gifted, advanced student.

Vivian, we want to thank you for all you and your staff do for all your students! Your passion for teaching and making a diiference in your students' lives shows in the way you care about each one of them.

We are happy to share with you the results of our child's 4th grade CA STAR math test results we just received in the mail. In 4 testing math standards, scores of 100% in each of them and in the math algebra and functions standard a score of 94%. We are blown away! Woohoo Pinecone!!

Thank you so much!"
