PineconeDoes Your Child Need Math Tutoring?

All parents want to see their children excel in academics - a strong educational foundation is the greatest gift they can give. But not all subjects are the same for a child - some are relatively easy and some complicated. Some children are able to motivate themselves to overcome their difficulties on their own, while others need a push to spur them on to overcome the obstacles. Reading, writing and math are areas where many young children experience difficulty in keeping up with the curriculum and abreast of their peers. Math can be an intimidating subject even for parents and it is often difficult to know when a child needs help. Delaying learning support for a foundation skill like math can allow it to become a lasting area of weakness that can affect the rest of a child's academic life. Knowing how to spot a child that needs tutoring in math will enable parents to provide them the support they need in the early years so that the weakness can be overcome.

Indicators of the Need for Math Tutoring

If a child is old enough to receive report cards, these can provide a direct indication of issues with math. Bad grades or a sudden slippage are obvious indicators. But fluctuations such as regular swings from As to Cs or Ds and then back to As again are also a sign of problems. Young children typically like to learn new things. Their minds are growing welcoming new challenges as long as they are not frightening. A lack of comprehension of a subject can make it something to be afraid of. Math can be interesting as it enables them to count, tell time, control money and so on - things that have practical applications in the young lives. A lack of enthusiasm for any of these or other math related issues that affect their lives, including play, is a sign of a problem in math comprehension.

The problem of lack of enthusiasm is not always a sign of weakness in the subject. It could be that the child has a natural talent or proclivity towards math and is able to work on math problems above the curriculum level. If this is the case, he or she could become easily bored and lose interest. Here too, math tutoring can help revive interest by offering challenges that will spark the motivation to excel.
Pinecone At Pinecone Learning we know that each child is different and each one has a different need in math, writing and reading. That is why we offer free placement testing and orientation when a child is enrolled with us. We work with the child to take him or her through a non-intimidating, simple, age appropriate test to determine the right starting point. This ensures that the areas of weaknesses and strengths are correctly identified and the right tutoring support is provided. If it is a case of boredom, our tutoring program will provide the challenge that is needed to renew the interest in the subject and create the enthusiasm to do well.

The Sooner the Better

Math is a linear subject - that means that every lesson learned is the foundation for the next one. Weakness at any level, or a lesson not understood and internalized, for whatever reason, will result in future progression being affected and the structured progression of learning and understanding becomes unstable. This could lead to a negative chain reaction that may lead to a greater lack of comprehension that originally existed.

The earlier that action is taken to help a child overcome difficulties in subjects like math, reading and writing, the more solid will be the foundation skills on which future learning will be based. An award winning instructor and a child friendly approach to helping young children overcome their difficulties in these subjects are a few of the reasons that Pinecone Learning has earned itself such an outstanding reputation.

"Ever since I have been learning at Pinecone, I have very much seen an increase on my grades so far. I have advanced to Gold Honor Roll before but also AFTER I participated in Pinecone. Not only I improved, but I have kept the grades and kept my honor roll at the Pinecone Learning center. My name is Erica Nguyen and I am very thankful that Pinecone has lead me to many, many successes."

"I am back in school again, senior year! It's pretty exciting to almost be done with high school. Algebra 2 went well this summer, I received a B+! I hope you are doing well, and thank you again! If it was not for your help, I know I would not have done too good."

childPinecone's methodology is to run the two foundation programs of Math and Reading at a pace which allows the child to assimilate the subject matter and apply the newly acquired skills to practical problem solving. The coaching is structured so that the child is able to reason for him/herself to achieve the highest level of comprehension. Regular practice and support instill self confidence and stimulate an eagerness to progress to the next level.
