Learning Today - Too Much Too Soon?

PineconeParents take pride in their children's ability to master skills at a young age. Today's children often appear to have been born with a keyboard in their hands and an understanding of technology that often leaves the older generation scratching their heads. While this is a good and natural evolutionary progression, it often leads to parents, and often society itself, presuming that natural aptitude makes it easier for children to study. This is not limited to only areas where the children display special talent - it encompasses all learning. After all, with the natural inclinations of children, and a supportive educational environment with state-of-the-art teaching tools and methods available, learning should be easier. The natural corollary to this partially true hypothesis is that children can be taught more in a shorter time that ever before.

Building Stress, Not Knowledge

It's easy to forget that aptitude, talent, new systems of pedagogy etc. can only do so much. There is a finite limit to how much young minds can absorb and the pace at which that knowledge can be internalized. If the pressure to learn becomes too much, the result is stress. Stress is not just bad for the physical and mental health of children, it can become a major impediment to the learning process. From stress to depression and from depression to all kinds of psychological and emotional problems can be a relatively small step. A recent study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health says that between 2% and 8% of children aged 7 to 17 suffer from depression.

The pressures of school, often finding focus in standardized test stress, starts in the first grade in many states. In Florida children as young as 8 are faced with the prospect of being held back if they fail these tests. If that is not stress, what is? And the ever increasing loads of homework leaves less and less time for the fun and relaxation that can help fight stress.

Coping With Stress

The young do not have the tools or experience to cope with stress with the same degree of success that adults can. In addition to the stress caused by an overloaded curriculum, there is peer pressure to contend with. Not all children learn at the same pace. A child who starts slow in one subject may, by the teen or adult years, be far ahead of his or her contemporaries. But the future does not impact the present. The stress felt by a child who may find keeping up with the class in a few subjects can often be devastating.

There is a safe and effective solution to this problem. It is one that has proven itself over generations - tutoring. Using the most modern teaching techniques, good private tutors can bridge the gap that often exists between the limits of the educational system and the individual needs of a child. By providing the specific and focused learning support that a child needs, tutoring programs can make the earning process easier, enabling children to stay abreast of or even outpace their peers in a stress free manner. In turn this will increase their self-confidence. This increased confidence and growing faith in their own abilities will, in turn, provide them with the tools to improve their academic progress and results across the board.

While the advantages of tutoring programs are unarguable, the quality of the results gained and the benefits that accrue to the children depends on the type and quality of the program. A professionally run tutoring program, with experienced private tutors that uses the latest teaching techniques to offer learning in a calm and stress free environment is the best option.

"When my son was in first grade I enrolled him in Vivian's Kumon class in Los Gatos. He progressed quickly and gained confidence in his abilities. We continued on with Kumon after Vivian left the center and another instructor took over. We stayed with her for a while, then dropped out for a year. We re-enrolled and after a few months transferred to another Kumon Center. We only stayed with the second Kumon Center for another couple of months.

Why did we drop and change twice after Vivian left? My son and I had become accustomed to Vivian's mentoring style. She's very thorough, but she doesn't intimidate. She truly cares about every child and adjusts her approach to their personalities. Her sense of humor and kind nature actively help kids to break through learning roadblocks. She is passionate about teaching, which shows in the helpful communications she sends out on a regular basis. My son is now in 7th grade and when we heard that Vivian opened a center in Los Gatos we were quick to enroll. It took several months to make sure there were no missing elements in his math skills, but he will soon be starting algebra.

Pinecone math is ideal because it follows CA State educational standards. In addition to doing traditional math problems, there are "thought" problems which require analysis of variables to find a solution. That was missing in Kumon, even though it's an important element of public school math. The program requires parental participation, ie, correcting homework and, of course, encouraging the child to do the workbooks every night."

Pinecone Learning - Where Your Children's Tomorrow Begins

childPinecone's methodology is to run the two foundation programs of Math and Reading at a pace which allows the child to assimilate the subject matter and apply the newly acquired skills to practical problem solving. The coaching is structured so that the child is able to reason for him/herself to achieve the highest level of comprehension. Regular practice and support instill self confidence and stimulate an eagerness to progress to the next level.
