The Art Of Writing

PineconeWriting is not simply a matter of sitting down and putting a pencil on paper. Translating what is in the mind to what can be read and understood is a skill that must be learned. Writing requires:

• Basic motor skills that increase with age and practice.

• Understanding letters, the combination of letter to make words and the use of these words to convey ideas or mental images.

• The use of increasingly sophisticated spelling, punctuation and grammar.

• The ability to organize thoughts into a logical sequence so that meaning can be clearly conveyed.

Unlike speaking, writing is not a natural skill. It is an acquired one that needs to not just be taught but to be taught in a manner which enables a child to understand how this skill can be used to communicate.

When Should A Child Learn To Write?

"When should my child learn to write?" is a question all parents ask themselves as their children grow. There are no set rules on this. Children begin learning the art of writing at different ages and a child who starts late may overtake his peers who began at a younger age. A child who has difficulty grasping the basic concepts of writing may be ahead of her age group in other subjects. This is why knowing if a delay in starting or difficulty in grasping concepts is a matter for concern, is important. Keeping this in mind, there are some general milestones that parents may use to their know if their children need support in the form of tuition to enable them to develop their writing skills.

Milestones – Ages 6 to 10

During these years children will usually learn to:

• Write consonant sounds (Kindergarten).
• Write more comfortably and with more legibility (1st grade).
• Construct their writing to include a beginning, middle and end and include more detail (2nd grade).

Milestones – Ages 11 to 13

In this age group children will usually be able to:

• Use correct spelling punctuation and grammar most of the time.
• Steadily increase their vocabulary.
• Increase their speed as writing becomes a more natural process.
• Begin to use more complex sentences and compound structures.
• Learn to use different styles to suit different subjects.
• Understand the use of reference material and how to include it in their writing.

Please remember that these milestones are very general in nature and a child not reaching them is not a cause for serious concern. However, it would be a good idea to discuss the matter with the child’s teacher and consider enrolling the child in a tuition center to get the additional learning support.

Pinecone The Pinecone Learning System

There is a difference between being taught to write and being taught how to write. The physical act of writing requires the ability to hold a pencil and form letters. It then progresses to putting the letters is a sequence to form words and later, sentences. Learning how to write involves understanding sentence structure, basic grammar, topic selection, the concept of logical sequence, the ability to describe, creating a conclusion and more. This forms the basis of effective written communication. This is what Pinecone Learning teaches its students.

Like our reading and math programs, our writing program presents material in manageable, easy to understand pieces which, with structured practice, students are able to easily understand and internalize. Tutoring should not be a crutch that children become dependent upon. It should be a developmental exercise that empowers them to grasp the fundamentals of a subject and create a strong foundation. This will enable them to face with confidence the challenges that higher levels of education will present. Our students are shown not only how to overcome the difficulties they currently face but also how to carry this knowledge forward and evolve it into the tools of academic success. That is the true aim of tuition.

"My son went to Ms. Vivian's previous learning center in Los Gatos for three years. He became quite advanced in math and required some help with difficult new concepts, but because he had mastered everything leading up to the new part, he didn't need that much help. Ms. Vivian guided him all the way and now he is taking Calculus BC class in his Senior Year. I am so glad to see her back in Los Gatos. She has even offered my son a job this summer. Good structured system, great instructor, immeasurable benefits for the kids. I recommend Pinecone to all my friends and neighbors with elementary school kids." ~ Alla O., Los Gatos, CA

"My son's passion is ice hockey, and he has always excelled at it. Academics (especially math and language arts) were extremely challenging for him. Vivian, with her program, worked her magic on my (less-than-enthusiastic) son and brought him up from a potential drop-out to a confident college grad. It was not easy, but it sure worked. He is now 28 years old and owns a very successful online advertising business. I cannot imagine what direction his life would have taken without your support and dedication. Thank you, Vivian." ~ Gail E., Los Gatos, CA
Pinecone Learning - Where Your Children's Tomorrow Begins

childPinecone's methodology is to run the two foundation programs of Math and Reading at a pace which allows the child to assimilate the subject matter and apply the newly acquired skills to practical problem solving. The coaching is structured so that the child is able to reason for him/herself to achieve the highest level of comprehension. Regular practice and support instill self confidence and stimulate an eagerness to progress to the next level. Each student is guided to anticipate and surmount hurdles consistent with present day education. The end result is a happy and confident child who is justifiably proud of his or her academic achievements.
