PineconeMath Milestones For First And Second Graders

How do you know if your child is falling behind in math? It’s not easy. A bad test score could be just because the child is having an off day. Difficulty in grasping a concept could be related to just that one issue and may not be indicative of a larger problem. Or these types of incidents could be a sign that your child needs help. One way of determining if your child is having difficulty with math is to use developmental milestones to evaluate progress. It is important to note that these milestones are generalizations. Every child is unique and some may reach these milestones faster than others and some may take longer.

Dealing With Numbers

Many six year olds are able to do mental addition and subtraction with answers up to 10. Seven year olds may be able to work out problems where the answers are in the teens. This is also the age when the ability to solve word problems develops. For example, the concept of "If John has 5 apples and Jack has 3, how may more apples does John have" begins to be understood. Another milestone is that children understand that 1 out of 2 is one half, 1 out of 3 is one third and 1 out of 4 is a quarter. Within a year, many are able to compare fractions such a one third and one half and know which is greater.

Between the ages of six and seven children are able to count by fives to a total of 100. From here, counting by twos to 20 follows. And then comes counting by threes to 24 or 36.

First and second graders are often able to combine two dimensional shapes to create a new one - a square and two triangle can be used to make a rectangle. The next step is often when children can look at a shape and break it down into smaller shapes - a square could be two triangles.

Measurement skills also start to develop at this age. This is when children are able to use a length of string to measure and compare distances. And when they understand that different shaped containers may have the same capacity - a half-gallon juice bottle holds the same as a half-gallon milk carton, although there shapes are very different.

Pinecone The Pinecone Advantage

It is most important to remember that the milestones are just that - generalized development indicators. A child that is not able to work on problems involving fractions may not be because a child does not understand the concept - it could be because the child understands it too well and since there is no challenge the problems are boring. What is important is that a child who is not happy with math be given the support and encouragement to make the subject understandable and interesting so that the satisfaction that comes from successfully solving problems is established. This is where tutoring plays such a key role.

In a school the teaching is based on the concept of the "common denominator" - what works best for the majority of the children in a class. The size of the class and other constraints make is difficult, if not impossible, to provide a child with the specific individual support that he or she may need. This is where Pinecone Learning plays such a crucial role. At Pinecone our focus is not simply on teaching our students the things they do not know or understand. We create a nurturing environment where the children are relaxed and comfortable. That makes them more open and receptive. We provide our students with the individual support and teaching that gives them the confidence to tackle difficult concepts with success. The combination of a learning friendly environment, individual teaching and support coupled with the best teaching systems and techniques is what makes Pinecone Learning a place where children are happy to learn and where parents find their children are given the academic foundation that is so important to their future success.

Our reading, writing and math programs are designed to remove the fear of the subjects that often hampers learning. Our success can be measured not just be how well our students do in school but also by the accolades we receive from parents as well as from the children who have benefitted so much from our tutoring.

Testimonials

"My son has been in this program for about 3 years now. I've seen the great progress he's made in math and reading. This program has helped him to be a step ahead and he is now able to do most of his school work on his own. Vivian played a big role in his progress. She's patient with him and always ensures that he's on the right track. I would highly recommend Pinecone to any parent who is seeking help their child."

"My son's passion is ice hockey, and he has always excelled at it. Academics (especially math and language arts) were extremely challenging for him. Vivian, with her program, worked her magic on my (less-than-enthusiastic) son and brought him up from a potential drop-out to a confident college grad. It was not easy, but it sure worked. He is now 28 years old and owns a very successful online advertising business. I cannot imagine what direction his life would have taken without your support and dedication. Thank you, Vivian."
