Developing The Desire To Write

PineconeYoung children's minds are full of wonder, curiosity and fueled by an active imagination. The ability to express that they are thinking, what questions they have and what they do not like about some of the things they need to learn is critical to opening the channel of communication that forms the basis of the learning process. The spread of email, text messaging and social networking has created a situation where children often do not have the tolerance or patience to write anything more than a few abrupt sentences. The fact that they are able to communicate effectively with their peers in this way can create an impression that nothing more is needed. It is only when they are older and their need to communicate more effectively, both in the class and in exams, is tested that they find they lack writing skills.

If your child is having issues in writing effectively, tuition can help to overcome the weakness. In addition, parents too can play an important role in helping their children to develop their writing skills. Here are a couple of things that you can do to make writing an enjoyable exercise for your children.

Write About Their Experiences

Children love to tell their friends about the things they do and the experiences they have. Talk to the other parents and set up a system system in which, after a playing a game (where the other kids were not involved), visiting a zoo, going on a trip and so on, each child writes about the experience and copies of the letter are given to all the other children. The next time they all meet, the other kids can ask questions about the things they want to know more about or about which they are not clear. Over time the questions a child is asked will point him or her towards the need to be more clear and provide additional inputs. Similarly a child can be asked to write his or her interpretation of a story they have been told to share with the other kids. These should be like play sessions with cookies and milk, not teaching sessions that they will not enjoy.

Writing Games

One way of playing is a variation on the Grapevine Game where one child whispers something to another. That child whispers it to another and so on. At the end of the chain the last child repeats what he or she has heard out loud. The end result is very different from the first whisper. In the writing game the first child writes a sentence on a piece of paper. The next child changes one word. The process is repeated till the end of the chain. The difference between the first sentence and the last one will show them how even small changes can alter the meaning. Another game could be the chain story where the first child writes the first sentence of a story and each child adds another. The way the story ends usually evokes a lot of laughter. Once again, it is important that this be a fun experience, not a "learning" one.

Pinecone The Pinecone Advantage

At Pinecone Learning we do not limit ourselves to providing children with the ability to read, write and use math to score good grades in school. Our aim is to create in them an appreciation of what they can achieve with these skills and it instill in them the confidence to use their talents to enhance their learning abilities. Being able to write a grammatically correct sentence is one thing. Being able to write to effectively communicate, at the age appropriate level, is another. That is our goal. Reading, writing and math are the foundation skills of learning and are tools they will use all their lives.

Every child has different doubts, hesitancies and areas where additional support is required. Because of the size of classes and the rigid curriculum they have to follow, teachers often do not have the time or resources to provide the personal attention that a child may need to be able to fully develop his or her abilities. Our reading, writing and math programs are designed to help children achieve their maximum potential in these subjects and by doing so, empower them to accept and overcome the challenges that the education system places before them.
